Do you ever feel like you’re the wrong person to be running your business?
I’ve felt that way in a lot of different seasons of my entrepreneurial journey—including some of the seasons that looked the most successful from the outside.
But I’ve been thinking about something lately that has completely changed the way I’m looking at that feeling: maybe the problem isn’t always capability. Maybe it’s capacity.
There’s a difference between not knowing how to do something and not having the mental, emotional, or physical capacity to carry one more thing. And then there’s another kind of capacity we don’t talk about nearly as much: our capacity to endure disappointment, uncertainty, and seasons where we don’t see the results we hoped for.
How much disappointment can I absorb without giving up? How long can I remain faithful when I don’t see results? Can I keep moving when I’m questioning whether this is actually working?
As Christian business owners, we’re not ultimately supposed to lead from our own capacity. We’re invited to depend on His.
We’ll look at Moses, who kept pointing to his own limitations while God kept pointing him back to His presence: “I will be with you.” And we’ll also look at Ruth, who had no idea what her future held but simply took the next step in faith.
This conversation was inspired by Jess Connolly’s book You Are the Girl for the Job, which I’m currently reading as part of a women’s leadership circle. The book isn’t the subject of this series, but it has been stirring up some really important conversations for me—and I wanted to bring them here.
If you’re a Christian business owner who has been wondering whether you have what it takes to keep going, I hope this encourages you.
💬 Have you been struggling lately to keep going when your business isn’t going exactly as you planned? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
