Thought

Productivity is most important for things you don’t want to be doing.

James got me thinking again with this quote, and when I read it in his recent newsletter (which is awesome, by the way), I knew I wanted to talk to you about it.

His point is: when it comes to increasing productivity, rather than focusing on getting faster at the tasks on our list, we should be more selective about what ends up on our list in the first place.

If you know my philosophy of Identify, Simplify, and Automate, then you know that I agree that a key component of productivity is to stop doing the things that don’t really need to be done.

I do think his quote (and the rest of his point, which was included in his newsletter) leaves, maybe, a little too much room for laziness to creep in and take hold.

I don’t think he meant it that way at all, but I want to address the need for balance here.

Streamline

When you begin to work on improving your productivity, start by Identifying where you are spending your time/energy, then you Simplify by removing what isn’t necessary (regardless of whether you enjoy doing it or not), and Automate what you can.

Ideally, this automation will take care of many of those things you don’t like to do but know you need, leaving you time and energy to enjoy the things that fuel your passion.
